In late 2006, IMIS was approached by one of Australia’s major Construction Materials Companies to develop a simulation model that would give them the capacity to model existing traffic behaviour in a quarry and then to model scenarios that reflected operational changes.
The objective was to reduce safety risk whilst optimising operational performance.
IMIS developed the SiteSim [Q] quarry simulation model. IMIS team members heading up the development of the model include Peter McKelvie, IMIS Supply Chain manager, with some 17 years experience in the Construction Materials Industry, and Dr Guy Eitzen, IMIS Research Manager, with qualifications in operations research and experience in optimising supply chain activities gained through projects with the CSIRO and the University of South Australia.
The model has proven successful and is under constant development in consultation with industry, increasing its accuracy and functionality.
“This is a great tool that allows a site manager to test scenarios, such as buying a new sales loader, before committing capital and time. It also allows managers to forecast impacts on operational and safety performance given changes in sales activity, such as large project work. It’s being well received by industry,” said Peter McKelvie.
